Economic liberalization was introduced in the country in the last decade of 20th century. In order to remain globally competitive, all core sectors were forced to economize their operations. Quality power at affordable cost was therefore sought for by all the stack holders of the economy. This required huge investment in the power sector to augment the generation capacity, to strengthen the transmission and distribution networks and to reduce the Transmission, Distribution and commercial losses. However the poor state of affairs of the Electricity Boards didn’t permit such large investments. Hence self sustaining growth of the power sector and its financial viability is therefore felt essential for the speedy and sustained socio economic development of the country. In order to create a healthy power sector that would pave the way for accelerated development in the country, the Government of India introduced the Power Sector Reforms. The reform aims to develop an efficient, commercially viable and competitive power sector and to provide quality and uninterrupted supply at reasonable prices to all categories of consumers. In tune with the national momentum, the Union Territory of Puducherry is also contemplating various reforms measures including restructuring of the operations of the Department.
